Dr. Daniel Truong
Dr. Daniel Truong is a graduate of the medical school at Ludwig Albert University in Freiburg, Germany. He is board certified in both neurology (Germany and US) and psychiatry (Germany). Dr. Truong completed a 3-year fellowship in Movement Disorders at Columbia University in New York, and the prestigious National Hospital for Nervous Disease at Queen Square, London, UK, studying under two of the founders of the field, Professor Stanley Fahn and the late Prof. David Marsdens. He was the first neurologist to arrive in Southern California with formal fellowship training in Parkinson’s disease and Movement Disorders.
Dr. Truong was the founder of the Parkinson's and Movement Disorders program at the University of California, Irvine and left in 1997 to form the Parkinson and Movement Disorder Institute. Together with his dystonia patients, Dr. Truong founded the National Spasmodic Dysphonia Association, for which he served as chairman of the medical advisory board from 1990 to 1997. He is currently Honor Board member for the organization. He was a Medical Advisor for the National Spasmodic Torticollis Association from 1990 until 1998. He is at present the medical director of the American Parkinson Disease Association Information and Referral Center in Orange County and Long Beach.
Dr. Truong was one of the earlier investigators of botulinum toxin prior to development by pharmaceutical companies and approval by the US Food and Drug Administration. He was instrumental in the early of development of botulinum toxin use in spasmodic dysphonia, a disorder that renders the patient unable to talk. Since that time Dr. Truong has played a significant role in the development of newer toxins.
Dr. Truong has appeared in multiple newspaper articles and TV reports. In 1991, the Los Angeles Times featured him in a full page article as the "Miracle Worker"for his work on dystonia.
Dr. Truong has published more than 140 scientific publications and book chapters, including 3 in the prestigious medical textbook "Handbook of Clinical Neurology". He also has published 6 books; one of them is the basis for a documentary film currently in production. His book on botulinum toxin has become a bestseller of medical title with Cambridge University Press.

Dr. Truong is recognized as a world authority in a movement disorder called myoclonus, which is currently measured with a scale that bears his name (along with Dr Fahn). He also developed the gold standard animal model of myoclonus, called the Truong model.

Dr. Truong serves on the editorial board of 7 neurology journals and serves as reviewer for 20 other scientific journals. He is an ad-hoc grant reviewer for other countries such as Great Britain, China.
Dr. Truong is currently the chair of the educational committee for the International Association for Parkinsonism and Related Disorders. He also serve now on the education committee of the World Federation of Neurology and the International Committee of the American Academy of Neurology. Previously, he has served on the publication committee and the membership committee of the World Federation of Neurology and the on McHenry Award committee of the American Academy of Neurology. He has been appointed as the program Chair of the XXII World Congress on Parkinson's Disease and Related Disorders in 2017.
Dr. Truong has given lectures worldwide in Brazil, China, Czech Republic, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Israel, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Morocco, Pakistan, Romania, Spain, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, and the Netherlands, many of them at the invitation of their national neurological organizations.
Research
Dr. Truong is currently engaged in research in Parkinson's disease, traumatic related dystonia and spasticity.
Dr. Truong has been involved in many dystonia research projects. Many results of these researches have been published in peer-reviewed journals. In the field of Parkinson's disease, Dr. Truong has participated in many clinical research studies involved with the development of many currently available Parkinson's drugs. He is a member of the Parkinson Study Group.
The Parkinson's and Movement Disorder Institute features patient care for neurological disorders as well as conduction of clinical and basic science research with the development of better treatments at its goal.
Worldwide Lectures
Dr. Truong has given lectures worldwide in Brazil, China, Czech Republic, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Israel, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Morocco, Pakistan, Romania, Spain, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, and the Netherlands, many of them at the invitation of their national neurological organizations. In 2013, he was elected Honorary Member of the Romania Society of Neurology. In 2014, he was honored with lifetime membership of the Pakistan Society of Neurology.
